RE: REAL LT snow tires

Hi Mathew:
You could look at Nokian's Hakkapeliitta LT tire. I have them, for winter only (November - March). They are a purpose made winter tire, with soft compound.
I'm very pleased with them, going into 3rd winter.
I have another set of tires for April - October.
good luck,
Roy

RE: Would there be a market for an adjustable pin box bike rack?

I designed and built a unit out of; 2" receiver stock, 1/4" steel plate and 2x2 aluminum aircraft aluminum (6061-T6) square stock and aluminum plate gussets. Cost about $60.
I was asked by a dealer if I was interested in marketing the design as they wanted me to build them so they could sell.
I indicated I wasn't in the business, and, my drawings were not available (for free that is). It was just a hobbie with me.
Good luck with your venture.
Roy
PS, you can see another of my ideas (roof rack) on my profile page.

RE: Front Cap Stress Fractures

The cap will actually flex inward, 1" or more, when washing it (scrubbing the bugs).
The factory gave the instructions to the dealer that made the repair. I guess I should go back to the factory. They did veto the original plan by the dealer to remove the cap and repair it off the 5er.
Does anyone know if there is access to the airspace behind the cap? I could then see what support structure there is behind the fiberglass.
Thanks for your replies / comments.

RE: Front Cap Stress Fractures

Our 5er is a 2007 Corsair Excella. Cracks developed on the front cap, near the passenger side clearance light well (1 - 3" long) and along the edge at the joint to the wall (6 - 1 1/4" long). They appeared after a trip of 150 mile duration, at the beginning of September. I suspect fatigue is an issue as we had only put 1,500 miles on the 5er this past summer. Last summer we put on 6,300 miles in one trip to Ontario and back. The unit was new in June 2007.
The cracks were repaired in September, on warranty, by the selling dealership. The crack at the clearance light well was drilled at each end before repairs were started. There were 6 other cracks along the passenger side where the cap joins to the sidewall. Gel coat was ground off, reapplied and smoothed, painted, etc. I am concerned the cracks will return (or new) as there does not appear to be support behind the cap in the center. The cap actually flexes inward when washing the bugs off from the center outward 1 1/2 feet (both sides of center).
comments anyone?
thanks,
Roy

RE: 14k Super glide Question

I've got a 16K, 5 years old. The individual mounting posts have very little vertical movement. However, when everything is assembled, and the hitch is bolted in, there is no movement of the hitch assemble.
I do have a MOR/ryde pinbox that has +- 1" of back and forth shock abosorbing movement though.

RE: Battery

Bob is right. A battery should be removed from the camper, if possible. The battery naturally discharges, and, if you can, put a trickle charger on it. If you don't have a trickle charger to put on it, it should be charged once a month to bring it back to full charge level. You can check the charge level by testing the specific gravity of each of the cells in the battery.

RE: When load range E is not load range E

The Sigma Radial Towmax, 235/80R16, 10 ply has a load rating of 3520# @ 80 psi.
The LT tires are 235/85R16, which is a different profile. This may explain the difference, as well as LT 10 ply tires are designed for tougher application and may have more reserve, when compared to a specialy trailer application.

RE: carrying 2-14ft kayaks

Gary and Ruth;
See our profile page. I designed / helped build an all aluminum roof rack that carries 2 kayaks and 2 mtn bikes. Rack could easily handle up to 15' long kayaks. We have a 2004 3500 RAM SB, with SuperGlide hitch. With proper design we do not have any issues on tight turns. Of course we have to be very careful turning while backing up (i.e. no tight turns backing up).
happy kayaking,
Roy

RE: Dragging rear of 5th wheel

Hi Mike:
One thought, I use a torpedo level to level my 5er, front - rear and side - side. I place it on the floor in the middle of the rear kitchen.
You may consider trying this to ensure your unit is level. You could then measure the distance clear to the ground (level ground of course) at the rear of your 5er. This will give you some idea of how much room you have when going over bumps, etc. As a point of reference, I have 28" clear at the rear of my 5er.
good luck,
Roy

RE: Pullrite Hitch Choice for Artic Fox

Hi Mike:
As a point of reference you can look at my experience. I initially purchased A 16K SuperGlide when I bought a 2004.5 Dodge RAM 3500 QC SB 4x4 in June 2004. At the time, we had a 1983 20' Travelaire. The GVWR of the 5er was 4,500#. I had to flip the axles on the Travelaire, as the new RAM replaced a '79 F250 SC LB 4x2. The RAM bed was 5" higher.
Our present 5er is a 2007 Corsair Excella 26RKS, with GVWR of 11,000#. Needless to say there is a huge difference between the 2 5ers. However, the hitch has worked well on both. The RAM is now tested, especially on long, steep grades.
safe RV'g

RE: Name Your Favorite Campground - Vancouver to Edmonton

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Wa are considering a separate return route, probably through the Okanagan.
Please keep the suggestions coming.
We have never been up the Prince George route. We plan to visit friends in Quesnel and that is why we are taking the interior route up to the Yellowhead.
We have family & friends north of Edmonton, but would like some thoughts on good campgrounds (need full services if possible) near Edmonton.
thanks again,
Roy

RE: Slide covers, are they a must?

I thought about installing a topper on our slide. However, how do you clean debris off that gets on the roof with a topper?
As we all know, it is windy at times and that is when the twigs and leaves get blown around and under the topper onto the slide roof.
What do you think?
thanks,
Roy

High End Desktop Replacment - Suggestions?

We are looking for a laptop that will be a desktop replacement. It will not be used for use on airplanes or daily travel use (portability), except in the 5er.
Uses would include:
- continuing with work/work (ACAD, MS Project, Excell, Word, Access, etc.) at home
- take with us on our road trips, for planning purposes, occassional television, videos and checking up on our favorite websites
We are looking at high end Core 2 Duo or Quad core CPU.
17" LCD screen, not sure of what spec on the LCD
4 Gb RAM
high end video card(s)
considering solid state storage or RAID 0/1
blue-ray
If you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated.
thanks,
Roy

Name Your Favorite Campground - Vancouver to Edmonton

We are starting to plan for our trip next summer from Vancouver Island to Edmonton. The route is Vancouver, Hope, Kamloops, Quesnel, Prince George, Edmonton, Calgary, Banff, Kamloops, Hope and back to Vancouver.
If you have any favorite campgorunds anywhere along this route we would be happy to hear from you. One of ours on the Coquehalla is Lac leJeune PP, although it is less desirable now since the pine beetle went through a few years ago.
So come one, come all, let's hear about those great campgrounds you have stayed at.
thanks,
Roy

RE: Locking 5th wheel so can't be stolen

If someone really wants your 5er, they will take it. I've thought of this several times over the years. Let's face it, that is what insurance is for. Relax and plan the next trip. Whatever happens in between hopefully will be covered by your insurance.
cheers and happy RV'g

RE: Question about rear kitchens:-)

We have a Corsair Excella 26RKS.
Appliances are located on the passenger side, between the door and RR corner. All tanks are forward of the axles, with grey nearest the front, black next and then fresh (closest to axles). Our pin weight is 17% of total, 1,700# to 10,000#.
5er pulls very smooth, with MOR/ryde pinbox on a SuperGlide 16K hitch, 5er also has shocks and 235/8016D tires and 6,000# axles.

RE: Cracks in Front Cap

The longest crack, ~3 1/2" long, is located at the left clearance light cavity, at the edge where the flat surface meets the cavity. I have pictures, just not sure how to post.
I'm not sure allowing the cap to move would have prevented this, but preventing the front from flexing would. When the front flexes (as occurs when washing it) the inflection point on the upper left side is right at the edge of the cavity where the crack is located. The cap is dished inward when traveling on the highway, stressing this point constantly.
I wouldn't be surprised if another crack appears on the other clearance light cavity.
